Who is dj Zodiac
Zodiac Killah is an East Coast native born in the 90's. Zodiac works
predominantly in the medium of sound recording, but includes visual art
and marketing in his large-scale performances. Zodiac was trained in
audio engineering and music production at the Institute of Audio
Research in 2009 (New York City). While his love of music and Djing
started at a young age with making cassettes for the ride to school, his
passion was ignited while living in New York where the bar he
frequented needed better music and entertainment. He became the resident
DJ there for over a year. After moving to Los Angeles, Zodiac has done various nationwide DJ & EmCee Radio shows to promote his name. His favorite event that he has worked on is a series of solo shows in North Hollywood called “Jammin’ for Change” at Panda Express where proceeds benefitted agencies targeting education and child hunger. Additionally, he works in Leimert Park Village to help expose the community to black art every year for a two-day Juneteenth Festival.
His newest release, “Beer Run (Because Everyone Needs One),” was inspired by living in Koreatown in LA. He decided to make a soundtrack for the experience of hanging out with a myriad of neighbors on the front stoop, deciding who would go make the next “beer run.” The original track was fifteen minutes (about as long as the bodega errand would take), but was shortened for it’s release. The sound for “Beer Run” was influenced by producers such as Burial, Fourtet and Skrillix.
Zodiac’s musical background is in drum and bugle corps, jazz band on the trombone, and self-teaching most other instruments. His production and DJ style is influenced by jazz, blues, RnB, anything electric, and old vinyl records that he finds in Goodwill stores. Furthermore, he draws inspiration from artists such as his grandfather Afrika Bambaataa, TC Izlam, DJ Soulslinger, DJ Craze, DJ Qbert, DJ Enferno, Mista Jam, and DJ Target.
Currently, Zodiac is the resident DJ at the Exact Science Gallery and Clothing on Melrose in West Hollywood. He is getting ready to release “Killah Breaks Vol. 1,” and is cooking up “Killah Breaks Vol. 2.” Drawing on inspiration from these experiences, Zodiac is about to officially launch his online clothing boutique, Uniq Apparel.
Zodiac is a new age “Renaissance Man” and loves to harness human emotions to translate through sound and visual art. Some future projects for Zodiac include “The Tupac Vs Biggie Mixtape” and the “Nas ‘Untitled’ Killah Remixes Mixtape.”
His biggest goal as a DJ is to compete in the DMCs and, most importantly, to entertain a crowd of people who want to dance and be exposed to new, yet-to-be-discovered music. Dj Zodica has now found a home with Rangutan Royal Music Group.
